Irvine Valley College Students Talk about their Accelerated English Class

In this short video created by IVC English teacher Summer Serpas, students share their experiences of being in her accelerated English course — how they feel about being able to take a one-semester class instead of up to 2 semesters of the traditional sequence, and their response to the readings assigned in the first few weeks of class (Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” about how “fixed” and “growth” mindsets influence learning, Daniel Pink’s book Drive about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation).

In this video, Carrie Goulding’s accelerated English students talk about their response to the placement test that put them into developmental courses, as well as their experiences in the classroom — whether they’re finding its requirements too difficult, what they’re doing to learn the material, their motivation, and their feelings how the accelerated course supports their educational goals.
