Regional Acceleration Meeting, Orange County, February 10, 2012 –
In this video, Cuyamaca Math Instructor Terrie Nichols talks about her first semester teaching an open-access pre-Statistics course. She describes the new pedagogical approach she’s been using and a moment when she reverted back to her old ways and “killed the magic.” She also (hyperbolically) paraphrases the guidance she received from CAP coach Katie Hern, who encouraged her to focus on how, even if it was bumpy, her class was going to increase the number of students who complete college math (“the needle will move”). She also discusses the amazing performance she’s seeing this semester in her college-level Statistics class, among students who took the new pre-Stats course in fall.
